Our Cookbook Challenge

Paula had the New Year idea of giving us the challenge to cook one recipe from each of our cookbooks each week this year until we had made at least one recipe from each book.  Her thoughts were not only to crack open many of the books that, despite being packed and moved several times, had not been used in our ten years together, but also that she would like her own challenge to be pushed out of some cooking ruts and learn some new things.  Normally, I seldom use a recipe when I cook anymore, unless I am looking for a definitive version of a classic dish and even a recent purge of our cookbook collection hadn't really inspired me to delve into the books we chose to keep.  Yet, her idea intrigued me and I said I'd be up to the challenge.
Our rules are simple.  We alternate weeks, choosing one recipe from one of the books.  For the most part, once a recipe has been made from a book, the other person will not choose one from that same book, but we have agreed that if one of us chose from a book the other had their heart set on selecting from exceptions can be made, as we have not divvied up the books or staked any claims out loud.  The recipe need not be a main dish.  Though we have started out mostly doing something for a weekend dinner, our intention is not to limit ourselves to a particular meal, nor to have the recipe always take on a "special occasion" quality.  Some of them could include a do ahead dish for a weeknight supper, a side dish for lunch, something to use up an ingredient we have that week.  Of course, there are also plenty of baking books in the collection, so there will be some pastries, breads and some sweets along the way.
We have actually cooked several recipes already before we got around to getting this page going, so we'll post them as quickly as we can, but then our idea is to cook and post a recipe each week.
